“Dui” comes from the Kayan dialect, spoken by one of the Indigenous natives of Sarawak. It simply means “drink.” But to us, it carries far more than just the act of lifting a glass. It is an invitation to honour our roots, to gather in celebration, and to keep alive a tradition passed down through generations. “Dui Tuak” quite literally means “Drink Tuak” yet within those two words lies a toast to heritage, culture, and identity.
It is about more than the rice wine itself; it is about the spirit of community, the warmth of togetherness, and the respect we hold for those who came before us. Every time we say “Dui,” we echo the voices of our ancestors, reminding ourselves that to drink is also to connect with our people, our land, and our shared story.
